Starhawk’s Earth Activist Training
Katrina was a guest speaker for Starhawk's permaculture course in January 2013
5 Day Intensive pre-event permaculture course with attendance of over 50 patrons, September 2013. This five-day course “Elemental Alchemy” covered the basic principles of permaculture and various aspects of sustainability along with action items. Students learned how to design and map their environment, build watershed and energy awareness; manage food forests, rainwater and animals, build a cob oven, worm bin, and solar oven. These projects were then on display as an eco expo, open for attendees at the Symbiosis Gathering to peruse and inquire about.
Katrina helped coordinatethe course and was one of the main teachers along with Timo Granzoli and she opened up the opportunity for students are asked to participate in eco tours for guests at the festival to learn about the environmental initiatives at the Symbiosis Gathering and explore ideas they can do at home and beyond.
Community Development
Through partnering with cities, communities and organizations we identify resources to coordinate efforts between leaders, projects and organizations together for a stronger, more vibrant community. We help with structure, systems, programming, stakeholder analysis and more. We develop asset maps by identifying the assets and resources in a given area and help our clients achieve their visions for a healthy community.

Our founder, Katrina Zavalney has been deeply involved in community building activities from the ripe young age of 14! This natural organizer engaged in leadership roles and training since her teenage years and this passion for community building has only grown. Most recently Katrina was the Revitalization Coordinator for the city of Clarksdale, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta where she helped develop a strong Farmers' Market and local economy. She was one of the main coordinators with the City Repair Project in Portland, OR in the early 2000’s and helped grow this community development organization nationally.
Katrina specializes in: Asset mapping, facilitation, community building, processes & activities, and planning. She is an integration strategist and can easily handle government relations or neighborhood relations on any level. Katrina has even created a Community Organizer’s Tool Kit with step-by-step resources for community engagement.
Katrina says “As we each have something of value to share it is essential to map the resources and skills to learn how these talents can build sustainable communities and prepare us to be solution minded and resourceful in face of a disaster.”
Notable Involvements
Katrina is on the Board of Directors of Planting Justice
a non-profit that serves disenfranchised communities through healthy food and education based in Oakland, CA
Katrina was on the Board of Directors Member for the Strong Foundation for Environmental Values
a grant-giving organization to environmental programs in the San Francisco/ Bay Area.
